He had nothing but his flock of sheep, a loyal horse, and a heart full of kindness. Though he was poor, he always helped travelers and neighbors in need. One day, while grazing his sheep near a hidden valley, Akil stumbled upon an old, mysterious man sitting by a sparkling, blue lake. The old man looked weak and thirsty. When Vasilisa was still a child, her mother grew gravely ill. Before she passed away, she gave Vasilisa a small wooden doll, saying, "Keep this doll close, and whenever you need help, feed it a little bread and it will guide you." Tired of his simple life, he decided to go out into the wide world to seek his fortune. Before he left, his mother gave him a pair of sturdy boots, a loaf of rye bread, and a magic belt that would give him strength whenever he needed it. Sprīdītis wandered through forests and fields until he came upon a dark, enchanted wood. Deep in the forest, he met Lutausis , a lazy, greedy giant who terrorized the nearby villages.
