The Fox and the Guinea Pig
The Fox and the Guinea Pig
Once upon a time, high up in the Andes Mountains, there lived a cunning fox and a clever guinea pig. The fox was known for being sly and quick, always hunting for food. The guinea pig, on the other hand, was small but very clever, always thinking of ways to outsmart bigger animals.
One cold morning, the fox was prowling through the hills, looking for something to eat. His stomach growled loudly, and as he wandered, he spotted the guinea pig nibbling on some grass near a bush. The fox licked his lips and thought, Ah, a little guinea pig will make a fine meal!
The fox crept closer and then pounced in front of the guinea pig. “Well, well, little one,” the fox sneered. “It seems I’ve found my breakfast!”
The guinea pig, though scared, didn’t show it. Instead, he smiled and said, “Oh, mighty fox! What luck that you’ve come! I was just about to prepare something delicious for you. But if you eat me now, you’ll miss out on an even better feast.”
The fox, curious and hungry, paused. “What are you talking about?”
The guinea pig pointed to a nearby field and said, “I’ve been working on a treasure—a feast fit for a king! If you let me go, I’ll show you where it is. It’s much better than a tiny guinea pig like me.”
The fox’s mouth watered. “A treasure? A feast? Fine, show me where it is, but no tricks!”
“Of course, no tricks!” said the guinea pig, grinning. He led the fox to the edge of the field, where there was a big patch of dried grass. Nearby was a large stone that the guinea pig had placed there earlier.
“Right here!” said the guinea pig, pointing to the ground. “Under this grass is the treasure. But you’ll have to close your eyes while I prepare it for you.”
The fox, impatient and greedy, closed his eyes, thinking of the delicious feast. As soon as the fox’s eyes were shut, the clever guinea pig scampered behind the large stone and pushed it with all his might. The stone rolled down the hill, gathering speed, and hit the fox square on the tail!
“Ow! What’s happening?” the fox cried, spinning around. But by the time he looked, the guinea pig had disappeared into the bushes.
The fox was left with nothing but a sore tail and an empty stomach. “That tricky little guinea pig!” he growled. “He outsmarted me!”
From that day on, the fox learned to be more cautious, and the guinea pig became a legend among the animals of the Andes, known for his cleverness and quick thinking.
Moral of the Story:
This tale teaches that brains can overcome brawn and that clever thinking can save you from even the trickiest situations. It’s also a reminder to not let greed cloud your judgment. This story is often shared among Andean communities and reflects the cultural admiration for wit and resourcefulness in overcoming adversity.
