The King and the Clever Daughter
The King and the Clever Daughter
Long ago, in a kingdom nestled between the lush hills and golden shores of Sri Lanka, there lived a wise and just king named King Parakrama. His kingdom was prosperous, and he was beloved by his people. However, despite his many great qualities, the king had one problem: he had no son, and thus no heir to the throne. His only child was his beloved daughter, Madhavi.
Madhavi was unlike any other princess in the land. She was not only beautiful, but she was also known for her intelligence and quick wit. She would often engage in deep conversations with the scholars and sages who visited the palace, and many came to admire her wisdom. Still, her father, the king, was concerned about her ability to rule. In his heart, he believed that only a male heir could be capable of taking the throne.
One day, King Parakrama gathered his advisors and said, “My dear daughter is clever, but she is still young, and I doubt that the people would accept her as ruler. I must test her wisdom and see if she is truly worthy to lead this kingdom.”
The king called for his daughter and declared, “Madhavi, I will give you a challenge. If you can solve this puzzle, I will consider you worthy to become the ruler of this kingdom. But if you fail, you will be sent away to live with the sages in the far mountains.”
Madhavi, though surprised, agreed without hesitation. The king smiled and presented her with a simple-looking basket. Inside the basket were three items: a golden ring, a precious jewel, and a small bird. The king’s challenge was this: “You must pick one item, but you cannot touch the bird. If you can explain why the bird is important, then you will be worthy of ruling this kingdom.”
Madhavi thought for a moment, then smiled and said, “Father, I will explain the importance of the bird, and you will see how it fits into the kingdom.”
With that, she carefully picked up the small bird and began to speak. “This bird represents the people of the kingdom. It is small, delicate, and full of potential, but it needs freedom to fly and grow. The golden ring and precious jewel are valuable, but they are only material wealth. The kingdom, like the bird, must not be ruled by greed or desires. Instead, it should be ruled with wisdom, where every decision allows the people to grow, live freely, and thrive.”
The king listened carefully to her words and was astonished by her wisdom. He realized that the bird was symbolic of the kingdom’s people, and her insight into the importance of guiding the people rather than controlling them was the mark of a true leader.
“You have passed the test, my daughter,” the king said, with great pride in his heart. “Your wisdom exceeds that of many rulers. You shall be the heir to the throne.”
Madhavi ruled the kingdom with great intelligence and fairness. She listened to the people, made decisions based on their welfare, and ensured that peace and prosperity reigned in the land. Under her rule, the kingdom flourished, and the people adored her, for she was a ruler who truly understood the value of freedom, wisdom, and kindness.
Moral of the Story:
This Sri Lankan fairy tale teaches the importance of wisdom over wealth and the power of leadership that considers the well-being of others. It shows that true leadership comes from understanding the needs of the people and leading with compassion and intelligence, rather than being driven by pride or greed.
