The Maiden and the Golden Star
The Maiden and the Golden Star
Once upon a time, in a small village nestled in the mountains of Spain, there lived a kind and humble maiden named Estrella. She was named after the stars because of a mysterious golden star-shaped birthmark on her forehead, which glowed faintly in the moonlight. Villagers believed it was a sign of good fortune, and they loved her for her gentle heart and selflessness.
One day, the king of the land announced that his son, Prince Alejandro, was searching for a bride. He decreed that any maiden who could pass three tests of virtue, intelligence, and courage would be chosen as the future queen. The announcement spread across the land, and young women flocked to the castle to try their luck.
Estrella had no intention of going; she was content with her simple life. But one night, an old beggar woman knocked on her door, asking for food and shelter. Estrella welcomed her in, sharing her last loaf of bread and offering her a warm place to sleep.
In the morning, the beggar revealed herself to be a powerful enchantress. Grateful for Estrella’s kindness, she said, "Your heart is pure, and you are destined for greatness. Go to the palace and take the tests. This golden star on your forehead will guide you." Before Estrella could respond, the enchantress vanished in a shimmer of light.
Encouraged by the blessing, Estrella set off for the palace. When she arrived, the other maidens mocked her simple dress and modest demeanor, but she paid no attention to them.
The First Test: Virtue
The king presented a beautiful chest filled with gold and jewels and told the maidens, "Take what you desire." Many eagerly grabbed handfuls of treasure, but Estrella took nothing. When the king asked why, she replied, "These riches belong to the people of the kingdom. They are not mine to take."
Impressed by her humility, the king advanced her to the next test.
The Second Test: Intelligence
In the royal garden, the prince presented a riddle: "What grows taller the more you take away from it?" Many maidens guessed trees or mountains, but none were correct. Estrella thought carefully and said, "A hole."
The prince smiled, delighted by her cleverness, and she moved on to the final test.
The Third Test: Courage
For the last challenge, the king led Estrella to a dark forest. "In this forest lives a dragon that has terrorized the kingdom. Whoever can retrieve the pearl from its hoard will prove their bravery."
Though terrified, Estrella entered the forest. As she approached the dragon's cave, her golden star began to glow brightly, illuminating the dark path. When the dragon emerged, instead of attacking it, Estrella spoke softly, "Mighty dragon, I seek your pearl not for myself, but to bring peace to the kingdom."
The dragon, enchanted by her bravery and sincerity, bowed its head and handed her the pearl.
The Happy Ending
When Estrella returned to the palace, the king and prince were in awe of her virtue, intelligence, and courage. Prince Alejandro knelt before her and asked for her hand in marriage. She accepted, and they were wed in a grand celebration.
As queen, Estrella ruled with kindness and wisdom, her golden star shining brightly as a beacon of hope for all in the kingdom.
This Spanish tale, like many, emphasizes the importance of humility, cleverness, and courage—qualities that win hearts and create harmony.
